FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
AMS INTERNAL NEWSLETTER
Al’s Thoughts
Welcome to the fall 2022 edition of “Freedom of the Press.” It’s not Jeff’s Journal or Erik’s Editorial, well, because I am not Jeff or Erik. Jeff has been a great contributor to our newsletter since its inception, but Jeff and Erik decided to change it up and have other members of the leadership team of AMS bring their perspectives and information about themselves to the department newsletter. I doubt it will be the last time we see Jeff’s Journal, and we’ll still be looking for him in the “Where’s Jeff” section. For some reason, I can never find him (and I mean never), so feel free to reach out to me to point him out as the newsletters are distributed.
So, who am I you ask (well, that’s what I heard in my head as I was writing this)? I’m Al, full name Alfred, but the last time that was used I am guessing I was a teenager, and my mom was calling me after having done something wrong. I am a husband of 21 years to Karen (who also happens to work for Raymond James as part of Raymond James Investment Management) and father to two girls, Alexa, 18, and Haley, 13. I’m a Giants fan, a Yankees fan and have become a Lightning fan and a long-time mediocre golfer, stressing mediocre. I’ve been a volunteer soccer and softball coach for my kids (having never played those sports). I also happen to be the chief operating officer of the department.
Since this is my first newsletter, I wasn’t sure what to write about. Do I run down my life’s biography starting with growing up in New Jersey? Should I talk about not wanting the college experience in the cold and journeying to Tampa for the University of South Florida in 1993? Maybe my Raymond James journey started in January of 1998? I’m happy to talk about all those things, but I’ve been thinking about Halloween and Thanksgiving recently.
Karen and I were looking at scheduling some appointments a few weeks ago, and an opening was on Halloween. I was debating what my 13-year-old thinks of Halloween now and if I should make the appointment for that day. As a dad in this transitional phase on not having “little kids” anymore, I was thinking back to the first Halloweens for my kids (Alexa the bumblebee and Haley the cow) and how quickly the time has gone.

I was thinking back to my teenage years as the costumes got pretty “lame” (I’m on the right) in the last-ditch efforts to still get some candy from the neighbors.

That also got me to thinking about Thanksgiving. I remember the tradition growing up of a big family Thanksgiving each year, watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (occasionally in person). With changes in the family, our celebrations have gotten smaller. Last year we took the kids to Boston for Thanksgiving. (And yes, I did take the tour of Fenway Park.)

We made sure to stop during our walking tour on Thanksgiving though to watch the end of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on my phone. This year Thanksgiving will be in Tallahassee to spend the day with my oldest at Florida State University. Regardless of the changes, I stay thankful.
I appreciate you allowing me the time to tell you a little bit more about myself. I am also thankful for all that you do every day in supporting AMS, our advisors and their clients.
Al
BEEN AROUND THE BLOCK
New Kids on the Block has been used to introduce new AMS associates on a quarterly basis. We decided to switch it up and get to know a few of our more tenured associates!

Tom Thornton
SVP Due Diligence, St. Petersburg, FL
- Tell me about your role in the department – what is a typical day like for you?
- A member of the Research team (31 total of us), where we decide asset allocation and seek to pick good money managers for our clients in Freedom, RJCS, and UMA. A typical day would include two meetings with current portfolio managers, one with a potential portfolio manager, discussion with other AMS researchers about those meetings, couple hours of analyzing how we are doing and how we could be better, and reading about 250 emails about markets and related info.
- What role did you start in at RJ?
- November of 1990 (not a typo) I started with Corporate Finance/Investment Banking, worked on spreadsheets for almost 12 months, then was hired into AMS/IAS as a SMA trader in late 1991 as the 13th AMS associate.
- What has changed the most since you first joined RJ / AMS?
- My hairline (early AMS photo attached).
- What is your favorite memory of RJ / AMS?
- Halloween when some of us “dressed up” like a fraternity party, the day went by fast and fun.
- What do you like to do away from work – hobbies or activities?
- Any and all sports/leisure activities, including watching, but more playing.
- Top 3 bucket list items?
- Play golf at some famous courses in Ireland and Scotland, spend some (more) quality time in Hawaii with my wife, and learn to play more than two chords on my guitar.
- What accomplishment are you most proud of?
- Spending a somewhat scary month in Kazakhstan and Russia, successfully adopting two children.
- What was your favorite job?
- Current job, seriously. Not bailing hay, not detasseling corn, not washing restaurant dishes, not short order cook, not the meat packing plant, not stocking shelves, not shipping electronics, not loading luggage onto planes.
- Do you have any side-hustles?
- Fantasy football, but seasonal and not very lucrative.
- What’s your favorite family tradition?
- Going to Sanibel Island down by Fort Myers, yearly, beach vacation, wife loves it so I love it.
- What TV show are you currently binging?
- 90210 the original.
- If you could instantly acquire one talent or ability, what would it be and why?
- Predicting the next 6-12 months in market movements, to help Freedom clients better.

Steve Romanoff
AMS Sales, Director of Externals – St. Petersburg, FL
- What role did you start in at RJ?
- I joined the firm in August 1992 working as a client service associate in the Elite department which is now better known as Capital Access. I was responsible for processing new account applications which included ordering checks for clients, debit card(s) and ensuring the appropriate documents were noted in the SIS back-office system. I would then file the account paperwork in 3-ring binders that were kept on a bookshelf in our department. We have come a long-way since those days for sure.
- What has changed the most since you started with RJ?
- So much has changed since I started, yet so much has stayed the same. In sharing the obvious, I am humbled by the level of growth our firm has experienced since I started – the size of our firm, the people and our presence in the marketplace. When I started, all of the home office associates were located in Tower 1. One bragging right I have after 30 years is being able to say that I have actually worked in every tower at the home office complex (excluding the bank building) including 100 Carillon and our latest home in Towers 5&6. Despite the tremendous growth, the firm’s leadership has been able to preserve the small firm culture which remains so critical to our continued success.
- What accomplishment are you most proud of?
- The one accomplishment I am most proud of was going back to school to obtain my MBA after getting my undergraduate degree 22 years prior. It was the continued encouragement of my manager at the time and I took on the task with much trepidation. In the end it was one of the best things I could have done for my career and I greatly benefited from the experience.
- Favorite RJ Memory
- Sharing a favorite memory is extremely difficult because there are so many. I’d like to share two of them – a high moment and low moment:
The first is when I came across an advisor friend and his wife at the Elevate conference a few years ago. I had worked very closely with this advisor while traveling as an AMS external sales representative. After greeting each other I noticed that he had qualified as a Chairman’s council producer and I congratulated him on his success. It was then his wife with a tearful smile told me that I was a big part of helping him get to that point in his career. We had worked together transitioning his business away from transactions into the managed platforms. For me, that represented everything we are about and I would consider it a true mountain top experience.
My low moment came when the sales and due diligence teams challenged each other to a basketball game (see attached picture) – circa 2002. We actually rented a gym and invited everyone from the department to attend which included Jeff Dowdle and George Raffa. Please note my two teammates including Erik Fruland and Scott Horack. Although the sales team triumphed in victory, there was little credit that could be given to my poor performance on the court. Let’s just say basketball is not my sport. If I recall, things were so bad that Jeff and George were actually heckling me from the sidelines. All in all it was a great time and the event represents the family atmosphere we continue to promote today.
- Sharing a favorite memory is extremely difficult because there are so many. I’d like to share two of them – a high moment and low moment:
- Personal Note
- Away from work I am all about family. I have two adult daughters (23 & 27) and a golden retriever named Nala. Outside of time with the family, my favorite activity is skiing and traveling wherever I can find good snow.

Jeff Hartnett
VP, Operations – Product Centers – St. Petersburg, FL
- Tell me about your role in the department – what is a typical day like for you?
- My responsibilities recently changed due to the RJ Operations / AMS Operations integration a few months ago. I am now the VP of FA Discretionary Trade Support, Advisor Services and Reconciliations. I’m working each day to bring myself up to speed so that I can support the teams doing all of the hard work in each of these functions daily.
- What role did you start in at RJ?
- I started with AMS in 2004. I started working the Systematic withdrawal desk. I moved to AMS Trading shortly after.
- What has changed the most since you first joined RJ / AMS?
- The size of AMS but not its heart. I recall the days of standing in a vacated space of our floor in tower 4 for department meetings. We are too big to do that now. The faces of the people may have changed over the years but the heart of AMS has stayed the same.
- What is your favorite memory of RJ / AMS?
- During extremely busy times seeing my groups rally together to hit the mark and service our advisors needs for their clients.
- What do you like to do away from work – hobbies or activities?
- Spending time with my family. Going to theme parks with the kids. Collecting guitars, vinyl records and retro video games.
- What accomplishment are you most proud of?
- Seeing people I hired progress in their careers at RJ.
- What TV show are you currently binging?
- The Boys on Amazon Prime
- If you could instantly acquire one talent or ability, what would it be and why?
- My son has autism and requires a lot of special attention and care. If I could do anything I would find a cure for autism so that he and others who are on the spectrum would not have to suffer the effects of it

Ronald McDonald House Tampa Bay
AMS Community Involvement volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House of Tampa Bay by cooking dinner for families at the house on September 14. Eight associates – Daren Pippio, Jennifer Mancini, April Dallas, Joseph Sheppard, Al Caudullo, Jeff Hartnett, Ross Klaskow, and Sara Witt – helped prepare the meal. Many donations, including food, toys and household goods, were given too.
The Ronald McDonald House is a nonprofit organization that helps keep families close to their hospitalized children who are receiving lifesaving treatment. The nonprofit provides housing and support for families that come from all over the world to get the best medical care possible for their children.

American Heart Association Heart Walk
The annual Tampa Bay Heart Walk took place on Saturday, November 5th at Raymond James Stadium. This year our AMS Helping Hearts team was led by Al Caudullo and currently had more than 10 associates. Our team had a fundraising goal of $14,000 and we raised $18,440.
The funds raised for this event helps to provide doctors with up-to-the-minute research so they can better prevent and treat heart disease among patients; fund groundbreaking pediatric heart and stroke research that is key to saving babies’ lives; and helping provide life-saving information – like how to eat in a way that is more heart healthy, how to recognize the warning signs of heart attack, and how to talk to a doctor about critical health choices.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

Celebrating differences with Rebecca Zwrerin
Rebecca grew up in the Midwest which probably doesn’t surprise anyone who greets her since she doesn’t know a stranger. She is quick to smile and loves to hug anyone who is willing. She is a dog mom to the cutest puppies in the world (not biased at all) and spends her time swimming and playing tennis with her husband Michael. She and Michael have been married for 21 years and they don’t keep score to keep the peace in the relationship. She is an avid reader and likes to read something to learn or grow and something for pure entertainment.
Rebecca became a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to support the firm as it grows in a diverse and inclusive manner. She believes that “Diversity and Inclusion is making sure that we intentionally engage all individuals based on respect and they we empower their voices to be heard.”
Rebecca was bullied in middle school. She doesn’t share this to make you feel sorry for her. She shares it so that people understand that it helped shape her into the person that she is today. Rebecca is compassionate and empathetic to people’s pain. She is a fierce ally for anyone who feels they have been diminished in any way, shape or form. Rebecca is “a lion when someone feels that pain and very aware of when someone feels left out. Inclusivity is a whole other level for” her. Rebecca has never met a stranger and in all the years I have personally known her, she has always been someone you can count on, personally and professionally.
“The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
Nelson Mandela, Former President of South Africa
